Practice items are the base resources for practice in network education. This paper discusses an overlay principle for writing such items. A prior choice sequence for the type of practice item is given according to the likelihood of answers and ease of operation. A method for writing the items is outlined step-by-step -- defining the knowledge tree, investigating points, and considering the main factors in the item types and item type template. This method is already in use in a multimedia network teaching system in accordance with QTI standard 2.0. The paper concludes by explaining with illustrative examples the benefits of a system involving practice and self-tests which has been built for primary school Chinese language teaching.
